The City Attorney's Office Civil Division provides internal support to the City on civil legal issues. This includes preparing and reviewing legal documents, i.e., contracts, leases, ordinances, etc.; providing legal advice to City service areas and City Council; representing the City and City employees when required by the Vancouver Municipal Code, in civil litigation and at administrative hearings.
Because the City provides such a vast array of services, civil attorneys must be knowledgeable in numerous areas of law, including land use, environmental, torts, public contracts, public bidding, telecommunications, labor, employment, condemnation, code enforcement, civil rights, public disclosure and economic development.
The City Attorney's client is the City of Vancouver. Civil Division members are assigned by City Attorney Bronson Potter to provide legal services to various City service areas. The City Attorney and staff have an attorney-client relationship with the City.
