Cemetery Stewards

The City of Vancouver operates three cemeteries; Park Hill, Old City and Fisher’s Landing.  Volunteers can help keep the cemeteries in top shape by trimming grass around head stones, pulling weeds and helping with various tasks that keep the cemeteries looking their best. 

Volunteers can come out on their own, with a group and/or join Project YOUTH for their monthly service project at Old City Cemetery.  

Duties & Responsibilities:

Volunteer are asked to trim, edge, clear, and clean individual headstone markers throughout the cemetery.


 •Complete required paperwork, meet for on-site orientation, schedule volunteer time.

•Volunteers may bring their own tools, including work gloves, shovels, trowels and rakes.  Necessary tools can be provided as needed. 

•Able to follow directions.

•Initiative to work independently.

•Able to lift up to 25 pounds.

•Interact and communicate with the public in a professional manner.

•Able to work outside in a variety of conditions such as heat, cold, or rain.

•Able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending, and handling of materials--repetitive motion of bending and stooping .

•Closed toed shoes and long pants are required.

•Track how many hours you spend completing your volunteer work and send to Volunteer Coordinator monthly


Old City, Park Hill, Fisher's Landing cemeteries

Time Commitment: 

Flexible date and time that works best for the volunteers. Typically 2-4 hour shifts per month

Experience required:

None required

Minimum age: 

Any age welcome, age 13 and under with a guardian. If you are under the age of 18 you will need to fill out a Minor Consent Form which can be obtained through the Volunteer Program Coordinator.
