Vancouver Police make arrest in drive-by shooting
August 26, 2024
Vancouver Police were called to the Woodspring Suites (200 NE 104th Ave) last night around 11:45 p.m., after callers reported that a male had shot into the building with a firearm before driving away in a silver SUV. When officers arrived, they located the exterior glass door of the building damaged with a bullet impact located inside the hallway. There were no reported injuries. The suspect and vehicle were caught on camera and a license plate was obtained.
Shortly thereafter, the Offramp Bar and Grill (400 NE 112th Avenue) called to report a male was at the business being belligerent. The male had the same description as the drive-by shooting suspect and was also associated with a silver SUV. Officers responded to the area and located the silver SUV northbound on NE 112th Avenue and attempted a traffic stop. The driver attempted to elude police and after a short pursuit a successful PIT (precision immobilization technique) was used, and the driver was taken into custody. The driver was confirmed to be the suspect in the drive-by shooting. A firearm, unspent rounds, and shell casings were observed inside the vehicle.
Gavin E. Woods Leonard, 21 years old, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Jail for Drive-by Shooting, Attempt to Elude, Assault III, and DUI. The vehicle was seized pending a search warrant.
The Vancouver Police Department Crime Reduction Unit is continuing the investigation.
