Playground Removals
Playground safety is a top priority for Vancouver Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. That is why playground structures must be removed when the equipment has aged out of the parks system, which is typically 25-30 years after installation.
We understand the importance of community access to playgrounds, so we check equipment regularly to monitor for safety issues and perform routine maintenance when replacement parts are available. Unfortunately, sometimes equipment must be removed to protect public safety.
Three unsafe playgrounds were removed in 2022. Due to limited funds and the close proximity of other playgrounds near these park sites (within 1 mile), there are currently no plans to replace the playgrounds at these parks. Replacements may be possible in the future, as funding and maintenance capacity allows.

Playground Removal Process
While each decision to remove a playground is unique, the general process remains the same:
- Playground is identified as nearing the end of its life span and it is determined that replacement parts are no longer available
- A playground inspection indicates that the equipment is no longer safe to use
- Signs are placed at the park to notify neighbors and frequent visitors that the playground is being removed due to safety concerns
- A contractor removes the equipment and recycles or scraps any material that can be re-purposed (Because the equipment has already been deemed unsafe, the department cannot donate or sell the equipment after removal)
- The ground where the equipment once stood is made safe for public access; in most cases the curb and wood chips will remain
- The former playground area is available to park users as open space
Share Your Park Improvement Ideas
Although there are no immediate plans to replace these playgrounds, we are always happy to hear ideas from the community about what they would like to see at their local parks!
