What can be brought to winter shelter
All personal items are the responsibility of the shelter guest and should be kept to a minimum. Guests are responsible for managing any items brought in. Any possessions must be taken when it is time to leave the shelter in the morning—no personal items can be left overnight in the shelter, and items cannot be stored for guests.
- Personal Items must be limited to 2 bags that can be safely kept in your sleeping area. These can be backpacks, rucksacks, or grocery-style recycle bags. They must be a size the guest can easily carry without requiring staff or volunteers to help.
- Carts will not be allowed inside the shelter spaces. Please don’t park carts outside the shelter, as we cannot keep them secure.
- Vehicles may be parked overnight during your stay in the parking lot; however, you must move the vehicle during the daytime hours of the building’s normal operations.
- Prescription or OTC medications: Please keep medications in their original containers with labels and keep them secured in your personal items.
- Guests will be responsible for their medications or their children’s medications. Medications must be kept out of reach of children and in a prescription bottle.
- No medication may contain any active alcohol.
- Staff will not hand out any medication.
- Service Animals: Service animals are permitted in the shelter. Guests are responsible for their animal’s behavior, feeding/watering, wellness, and cleanup. They need to be on a leash and secured by the owner at all times.
- If the behavior of a service animal or owner becomes negative anyway, coaching and corrective actions with shelter staff will occur, and they may result up to and including exclusion from the shelter for the animal and/or owner until corrective actions are taken to ensure greater accountability between pet, owner and staff members.
- Items not allowed in the shelter
- Alcohol and/or drugs: We have a strict no-alcohol or drugs policy in our shelters.
- Weapons: Firearms, knives, or other dangerous items.
- Excessive belongings: Nothing beyond two bags of items.
- Flammable items: Lighter fluid, candles, fireworks, etc.
